The Government of Ghana has announced a relief package for the families who lost loved ones in the tragic stampede at El Wak Stadium. Deputy Defence Minister, Ernest Brogya Genfi, disclosed that each of the six affected families would receive GHC150,000 in support.
In a meeting with the families on December 1, 2025, Mr. Genfi expressed condolences on behalf of the government and outlined how the financial support would be distributed. Each family will receive GHC50,000 to assist with funeral expenses, as well as an additional GHC100,000 as compensation for their loss.
Mr. Genfi reassured the families that senior government officials would continue to offer their support during this challenging time. He also announced that the siblings of the deceased would be prioritized in the ongoing recruitment process for the Ghana Armed Forces, ensuring that the families do not feel neglected in their grief.
The Ministry of Defence, in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, is also working to provide additional support, including emotional care and welfare programs to assist the grieving families.
President John Dramani Mahama has personally extended his sympathies to the affected families and reaffirmed the state's commitment to supporting them through this difficult period.
The tragic incident occurred on November 12, 2025, during the Ghana Armed Forces recruitment exercise at El Wak Sports Stadium in Accra. A sudden surge of applicants broke through security and rushed towards the screening gates, causing confusion that led to the deaths of six young individuals and injuries to many others.
Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin of the Ghana Armed Forces confirmed that medical teams are still working to stabilize the injured at the 37 Military Hospital. She conveyed the military’s deepest condolences to the affected families and wished a speedy recovery to all those receiving treatment.
