Otumfuo Urges Bawku Factions to Embrace Lasting Peace and Unity

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has called on the rival factions in the Bawku chieftaincy conflict to prioritize lasting peace, reminding them that they are “one people” and must continue to live together, regardless of the outcome of the ongoing mediation process.

His appeal was made during a historic joint meeting between representatives of the Mamprugu and Kusasi groups at the Manhyia Palace Jubilee Hall in Kumasi on Monday, December 1, 2025. This meeting followed months of separate engagements aimed at resolving the long-standing dispute.

The discussions took place in a notably cordial and respectful atmosphere, with both sides acknowledging that there is no legitimate reason for the continuation of the conflict.

The Asantehene commended the maturity and peaceful conduct demonstrated by both groups, describing it as a positive sign for the peace efforts. He urged the leaders to begin preparing their communities for a future without violence, stressing that sustainable peace in Bawku will rely on the collective willingness to coexist.

“Whatever the outcome of the mediation, you will still have to live together as brothers and sisters,” Otumfuo reminded the factions, calling for an end to the cycles of mistrust and unrest that have plagued the area.

Otumfuo is expected to present his mediation report and recommendations to President John Dramani Mahama in the coming days, paving the way for a broader consultative meeting with all key stakeholders to finalize the path toward lasting peace in Bawku.
