Nollywood actress Nkechi Blessing Sunday has voiced her irritation over the constant pressure from strangers online urging her to get married. Speaking on The Honest Bunch Podcast, she opened up about her upbringing, past relationships, and why marriage is not something she will be rushed into.
Reflecting on her childhood, Nkechi explained that although she witnessed domestic violence between her parents, it never shaped her belief that such behaviour should be tolerated in relationships.
“I have never dated anyone violent toward me. My father used to hit my mum, but that didn’t make me feel like any man should hit me,” she said.
She went on to share a story about one of her early relationships. “One of my exes when I was growing up—his name is Valentine—used to beat me. My mum would have him arrested, and when she did, I would go to the station claiming she only wanted me to leave him for someone else, which wasn’t true.”
Her mother, she recalled, was uncompromising. “The police would call my mum, and she would tell them, ‘Lock am join there.’ Before you know it, play-play, they would lock me too.”
Nkechi described her late mother as a strong, principled woman who never pushed her into marriage. “I would stay in the cell for two days, and on the third day, she would come and tell them to release us. She always said nobody should force marriage on me. Before she died, she never pressured me to marry.”
The actress stressed that pressure about marriage has never come from her family but from people online who have no relationship with her.
“I didn’t come from that kind of family. It’s only these online people not related to me who keep telling me to go and marry—like they are my father or mother,” she said.
Nkechi’s candid remarks have sparked conversations about personal boundaries, societal expectations, and the pressure celebrities face from the public.
