Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has accused powerful factions within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of driving the removal of key officials in independent state institutions.
According to him, these actions—presented as part of a broader government restructuring—are motivated by partisan interests rather than the national good.
In a letter addressed to President John Dramani Mahama and titled “One Year After: Ghana’s Democracy at a Crossroads,” Afenyo-Markin reflected on developments following the NDC’s return to power after the 2024 general elections. He raised concerns about what he views as a disturbing pattern of politically influenced dismissals over the past year.
The Minority Leader cited several examples, including the dismissal of thousands of workers across various state institutions, the unprecedented removal of the Chief Justice, and increasing pressure on the leadership of the Electoral Commission and the Office of the Special Prosecutor.
He argued that these actions appear to be part of a coordinated effort driven more by internal party operatives than by the Presidency itself.
“A pattern emerges, clear as daylight. Party hawks are the ones apparently driving the agenda,” he wrote, suggesting that influential groups within the ruling party are shaping decisions that undermine the independence of state institutions.
Afenyo-Markin asserted that these developments contradict the government’s stated commitment to national renewal and institutional strengthening. He warned that when governance becomes more focused on removing individuals than resolving pressing national issues, ordinary citizens suffer the consequences.
He added that an administration perceived as prioritizing political retaliation over national progress risks losing the trust and confidence of the people it serves.
