The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has unveiled an extensive, year-long program of events to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Ghana’s national currency, the cedi. Officially launching in August 2025, the celebrations will run until December, culminating in a national Thanksgiving service.
Under the theme “60 Years of the Cedi: A Symbol of Sovereignty, Stability, and Economic Resilience,” the anniversary aims to highlight the cedi’s journey since its introduction and reaffirm its importance to Ghana’s economy and national identity.
Official Launch and Highlights
The celebration will kick off in August at the Accra International Conference Centre. A key feature of the program is a special exhibition, organized in collaboration with the National Museum of Science and Technology, showcasing the evolution of the cedi. Mobile versions of the exhibit will tour the country, giving people across Ghana the chance to engage with the currency’s rich history.
As part of the campaign, the BoG will host a series of stakeholder engagements to raise awareness about currency handling, the lifecycle of the cedi, and how to spot security features. These efforts will be supported by public education campaigns such as “Keep the Cedi Clean,” “Currency Process,” and “Know the Cedi.”
Nationwide Outreach and Youth Engagement
In September, the BoG will launch Cedi Week—a nationwide community outreach and roadshow initiative designed to promote public discussions around the relevance of the cedi in daily life.
October will mark CediFest, a youth-focused series of events featuring campus activations, essay competitions, and educational forums aimed at deepening young Ghanaians' understanding of the currency’s role in economic and national development.
Final Events and Closing Ceremony
The main anniversary event is scheduled for November at the Accra International Conference Centre, organized in collaboration with the Bank’s Currency Research Department. The celebrations will conclude in December with a national Thanksgiving service, serving as the grand finale of the year-long observance.
According to the Bank of Ghana, Cedi@60 is more than a celebration—it’s an opportunity to boost financial literacy, strengthen public confidence in the cedi, and rekindle national pride.
