On July 16, 2025, Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon's eastern Bekaa Valley killed at least 12 people, according to local officials. The strikes hit multiple locations, marking the deadliest escalation since a U.S.-mediated ceasefire ended over a year of conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
Baalbek-Hermel Governor Bachir Khodr confirmed the casualties in a statement on social media, reporting that the dead included seven Syrian nationals—five of them from a single family—and three Lebanese citizens in the Wadi Faara area. Two more deaths were reported in the nearby town of Shmustar.
The Israeli military said the airstrikes were aimed at Hezbollah targets, including facilities used by the group’s elite Radwan Force. According to Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson Lt. Col. Avichay Adraee, the attacks focused on locations used for training and storing weapons.
The Radwan Force, Hezbollah’s special operations unit, was previously hit during a major Israeli offensive in September 2024. The IDF claims the group has been trying to reestablish its operations in the region since then.
Hezbollah has not issued an official response, but its media outlet, Al-Manar TV, condemned the airstrikes as violations of both Lebanese sovereignty and the existing ceasefire agreement.
In a separate statement, the IDF said Hezbollah’s ongoing military activity in the Bekaa Valley violates ceasefire terms and continues to pose a direct threat to Israel’s security.
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant also commented on the operation, reaffirming Israel’s stance against Hezbollah’s military presence in Lebanon.
