Drama unfolds as aggrieved assembly members, dressed in protest attire, accuse Municipal Chief Executive of financial misconduct and abuse of office
Ejisu, Ashanti Region – A high-stakes political showdown erupted in the Ejisu Municipal Assembly on Thursday when a scheduled vote of no confidence against Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Jerryne Asante was abruptly derailed—after the assembly hall was discovered locked, with keys allegedly removed on the MCE's orders.
The unexpected development sent tensions soaring at the assembly premises, where a heavy contingent of police officers had been deployed to maintain order and prevent potential unrest.
Protesters Dressed in Red and Black Stand Firm
Dressed in symbolic red and black attire with matching armbands, the disgruntled assembly members gathered outside the barricaded venue to address journalists, their frustration palpable as they condemned what they described as a deliberate obstruction of democratic proceedings.
Speaking on behalf of the faction, George Kuntu Blankson, Assembly Member for the Kwamo Electoral Area, revealed that members had arrived in good faith for the meeting, only to find the hall locked without prior notice.
"When we inquired at the Works Department, we were told the keys had been taken upon the instruction of the MCE," Blankson stated.
The embattled MCE faces a litany of allegations, including financial impropriety, abuse of office, and persistent disregard for assembly directives—accusations that have fueled months of simmering discord between her and the assembly members.
Regional Minister's Intervention Rejected
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, had reportedly written to the assembly requesting a postponement of the vote to allow for dialogue and mediation. However, the aggrieved members promptly rejected the appeal, asserting that neither the Regional Minister nor the MCE possesses the legal authority to suspend or cancel a properly convened General Assembly meeting.
Shocking Allegations of Fund Diversion
At the heart of the dispute are serious financial allegations:
· GH¢29,000 collected from a local company in August 2025 as property rates and business operating permit fees was allegedly diverted by the MCE and her personal aide to purchase roofing sheets for private use.
· Market traders have reportedly lodged repeated complaints over poor sanitation and alleged extortion by the MCE's personal aide.
The assembly's Public Relations and Complaints Committee summoned the MCE in April 2026 and subsequently issued a two-week ultimatum for her to address the concerns and refund the diverted funds. The aggrieved members claim the deadline passed without any meaningful action.
One-Week Ultimatum Issued
Frustrated by what they view as a pattern of impunity, the group has now given Jerryne Asante one week to resign voluntarily—or face intensified efforts to force her removal.
The standoff highlights growing tensions within the assembly, raising broader questions about governance, accountability, and the limits of executive authority within Ghana's local government structure.
As the clock ticks on the one-week ultimatum, all eyes remain fixed on Ejisu.
