A 25-year-old driver, Stephen Ampofo—also known as Kwabena Atta—has been sentenced to 15 years in prison with hard labour by the Tarkwa Circuit Court for stealing from and attempting to murder his neighbour, Elisha Makom.
Ampofo pleaded guilty to both charges of theft and causing harm. The presiding judge, Mrs. Hathia Ama Manu, handed down the sentence and also ordered Ampofo to pay GH¢5,000 in compensation to Makom, a farmer and the complainant in the case.
According to the prosecution, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Joseph Lartey, both men lived in Wassa Dawurampong in Ghana’s Western Region.
On February 28, 2025, while Makom was recovering from an injury and preparing a hot water massage at home, Ampofo visited and offered to help. After assisting, Ampofo left, only to return later and steal Makom’s Itel keypad phone while he slept.
Upon waking and discovering the theft, Makom went to confront Ampofo at his house. He found the stolen phone—minus the battery—inside. Although Ampofo initially denied the theft, he later admitted to it and left the scene.
Later that same day, around 5:30 p.m., Ampofo returned to Makom’s home. Finding him lying down, he attacked him with a cutlass, slashing his throat before fleeing.
Neighbours heard Makom’s cries and rushed him to a nearby health centre for emergency treatment.
Police later arrested Ampofo, who confessed during interrogation at the Bawdie Police Station. He admitted to committing the act under the influence of akpeteshie, a potent local alcoholic drink.
Medical reports submitted in court confirmed the extent of Makom’s injuries.
This case underscores the devastating impact of violent crime and substance abuse, and highlights the justice system’s role in protecting communities.
