Ghanaian gospel musician Evangelist Akwesi Nyarko has made a heartfelt plea to former President John Dramani Mahama, expressing deep frustration over what he calls neglect, despite years of loyal support for the politician.
In a self-recorded video that has gone viral on social media, the gospel artist reminded the former president of the sacrifices he made during Mahama’s political struggles. According to Nyarko, he stood by Mahama at a time when his political comeback seemed unlikely—even composing a campaign song in his honor, a move he says had a devastating impact on his music career.
"Even when it seemed impossible for you to return to power, I gave you my full support and created a campaign song for you—not for money, but out of genuine belief in your leadership," he stated.
Nyarko revealed that his open alignment with Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) led to severe backlash within the gospel music industry. He claims he was blacklisted by event organizers and ostracized by some colleagues who viewed his political stance as betrayal.
Despite these personal and professional losses, Nyarko says he has received no recognition or support from Mahama or the NDC leadership. He further disclosed that all attempts to reach the former president have been ignored, leaving him with no option but to make his grievances public.
The most distressing part of his message came when he disclosed that his financial struggles have become so dire, he's sometimes forced to go without food.
"There are days I go hungry for three days straight," he said, visibly emotional in the video.
Nyarko’s emotional appeal sheds light on the often-overlooked cost of political loyalty, particularly in Ghana’s deeply divided political climate, where public figures risk their careers by choosing sides.
As of now, neither John Mahama nor any representative of the NDC has issued a response to the claims.
