The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially announced its withdrawal from the upcoming Tamale Central by-election, which was scheduled to elect a replacement for the late Member of Parliament, Hon. Dr. Murtala Mohammed. Dr. Mohammed tragically passed away in the recent Obuasi helicopter crash.
In a statement released by the party, the leadership explained the reasons behind their decision:
“The NPP has resolved that it will not participate in the Tamale Central Parliamentary by-election to replace the late Alhaji Hon. Dr. Murtala Mohammed.”
According to the party, the resolution was reached during a National Steering Committee meeting held on Monday, August 11, 2025, at the party’s headquarters in Accra.
The party cited several key factors influencing their decision, including the sensitive circumstances surrounding the death of Dr. Mohammed and concerns about further political polarization in the country. The statement elaborated:
“In arriving at this decision, the party considered many factors, including the tragic nature of the vacancy and the potential for increased national division at this critical time.”
The NPP emphasized that engaging in a political contest shortly after such a national tragedy would be inappropriate:
“It would be inhumane and unconscionable to subject the nation to a competitive process in search of a replacement for the departed MP. The party believes that the tension and acrimony often associated with by-elections in Ghana should be avoided in this case.”
The decision has sparked widespread discussions, with some praising the NPP's sensitivity and others raising questions about political implications.
