The demand comes in the wake of a tragic accident that claimed the lives of 16 members of the Saviour Church. The victims were laid to rest in a mass burial in Obogu, drawing national attention to the dangers of the road.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Friday, August 1, the Member of Parliament for Asante Akim South, Kwaku Asante Boateng, urged the government to take swift and comprehensive action. He called on the Ministry of Roads and Highways, in collaboration with the National Road Safety Authority, to widen the most dangerous sections of the road, install traffic cameras, and intensify public road safety education.
“I urge the government, the Minister for Roads and Highways, and the National Road Safety Authority to act promptly. The deadly stretch of road must be expanded, and appropriate safety measures such as traffic surveillance and education campaigns should be implemented to prevent future accidents,” Mr. Boateng stated.
Echoing this sentiment, the MP for Asante Akim North, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, emphasized the urgent need for accelerated repairs and maintenance. He also requested that all relevant agencies provide regular updates on progress made.
“I call on the Ministry for Roads and Highways to prioritise and expedite all necessary repair works on the highway. Timely updates from responsible agencies are crucial to ensure transparency and accountability,” Mr. Frimpong added.
The Parliament’s appeal reflects growing public concern over the deteriorating condition of the Kumasi-Accra highway, which remains a critical link between two major cities in Ghana. Stakeholders hope that swift government action will improve road safety and prevent further loss of life.
