The Accra Regional Police Command has made a major breakthrough in its ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking with the arrest of 39-year-old Kwame Mananyi Tuanda, who is accused of using a private ambulance to transport large quantities of cannabis.
### Arrest and Seizure
The arrest took place on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, following an extensive surveillance operation by law enforcement. Officers intercepted a Hyundai Hiace ambulance, bearing registration number GX 277-20, near the Jamboree Drinking Spot at Labadi Maami.
According to a police statement, Tuanda was found standing beside the vehicle and claimed ownership of both the ambulance and its contents.
A search of the vehicle uncovered multiple sacks containing dried leaves suspected to be cannabis. In total, officers confiscated 700 parcels and 473 wrappers of the suspected narcotic substance.
### Origin and Modus Operandi
Preliminary investigations revealed that the drugs were loaded into the vehicle in Kpando, located in the Volta North Region, before being transported to Accra for distribution. Tuanda admitted to being involved in the drug trade since 2024.
Further probing found that the suspect initially purchased the vehicle as a standard passenger van, which he later modified by installing a siren and branding it as an ambulance to avoid suspicion.
Before switching to the Hyundai Hiace, Tuanda reportedly used a Toyota Highlander for similar illicit activities. Investigators also discovered that he had been using the ambulance for transporting corpses in addition to his drug trafficking operations.
### Next Steps
The ambulance has been impounded, and the seized substances will be forwarded to the Police Forensic Science Laboratory for further analysis. Tuanda is currently in police custody and is being processed for court, with investigations still ongoing.

In response to the arrest, the Accra Regional Police Command has called on the public to remain vigilant, particularly regarding the misuse of official or service vehicles for criminal purposes. The Command also reaffirmed its commitment to clamping down on drug trafficking and organized crime in all forms.
