Commissioner of Police (COP) Lydia Yaako Donkor, Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), has been elected to the newly formed Interpol Africa Committee. The Ghana Police Service made the announcement on Sunday, August 31, 2025.
COP Donkor, who will serve a four-year term, is the only woman on the committee. This milestone, the Service noted, is a significant step forward for gender equality in policing across Africa and reinforces Ghana’s prominence in global law enforcement.
The announcement highlighted that COP Donkor’s election is a testament to her extensive career in the police force and her exemplary leadership within the CID. Her inclusion in the committee, it added, signifies the growing emphasis on gender inclusion in high-level law enforcement decision-making.
The newly established Interpol Africa Committee aims to enhance police cooperation across the continent. It will focus on identifying priorities in the fight against crime, advising the African Regional Conference, and recommending strategies for policing challenges in the region.
Other countries represented on the committee include Egypt, Kenya, and South Africa, each serving four-year terms. Botswana, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, and Sudan will serve two-year terms.
The Ghana Police Service expressed that COP Donkor’s election is not only a personal achievement but also an invaluable opportunity for Africa to benefit from her expertise and experience over the next four years.
