Ghana Cedi Ranked as the Worst-Performing Currency Globally

The Ghana Cedi has recently been ranked as the worst-performing currency in the world, according to a Bloomberg report. This comes after months of consistent challenges for the currency, which has experienced a significant decline.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Dollar emerged as the best-performing currency globally. However, the tide has turned, with the Cedi now slipping by 13% in recent months. This marks a sharp contrast in the global currency market, highlighting the volatility of the Ghanaian currency.

Hamza Adam, the Head of Market Risk Management at UMB Bank, attributes the Cedi's poor performance to Ghana's heavy dependence on imports. This has created significant pressure on the currency, as demand for foreign currencies continues to rise.

In addition, it was reported that banks making dollar requests for clients to the Bank of Ghana last week received only half of the amount they requested. The central bank is currently working to address these issues and meet the demand for foreign currency.

The Bank of Ghana, in a recent statement, reassured the public that the Cedi should stabilize within a reasonable range. "Our role is to ensure that fluctuations remain orderly, reflect economic fundamentals, and do not undermine confidence in the broader economy," the statement said.

As Ghana continues to navigate these economic challenges, the stability of the Cedi remains a significant concern for both businesses and consumers.
