The Mamprugu Youth Association (MAYA) of Bawku has strongly rejected the misleading claims made by Kwasi Kwarteng, the spokesperson for Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign, concerning the ongoing Bawku chieftaincy dispute. The group is demanding that Kwarteng retract his false statements posted on social media, which falsely suggested that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President of Ghana, had flown a rival chief to Bawku and imposed him on the local community in the lead-up to the 2024 general elections.
In a statement issued on September 5, 2025, the Mamprugu Youth Association described Kwarteng’s comments as a “blatant falsehood.” They condemned the claims as baseless, irresponsible, and damaging to both the people of Bawku and the Mamprugu Kingdom. The association stated that such allegations insulted a region that had already been politically manipulated in the past, further deepening tensions.
The statement also pointed out that these false claims were initially spread by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 2024 for political advantage. The group expressed disappointment that Kennedy Agyapong and his spokesperson, who were assumed to support the New Patriotic Party (NPP), were now repeating the divisive rhetoric previously used by the NDC.
MAYA also criticized the timing of Kwarteng’s remarks, particularly given ongoing efforts to move Ghanaian politics away from tribal divisions. They argued that resurrecting such divisive narratives, which had already fueled significant conflict in Bawku, was “irresponsible” and further escalated the fragile situation.
The association’s statement was a direct rebuttal to a tweet by Kwasi Kwarteng, in which he referenced the alleged incident, stating: “After that we can also discuss how Ghanaians received the candidate that flew a rival chief to Bawku and imposed him on the people just days before a general election.”
The Bawku chieftaincy dispute has been a long-standing and violent conflict, resulting in the loss of many lives and considerable suffering. Despite the government’s ongoing mediation efforts, peace remains elusive.
In conclusion, the Mamprugu Youth Association called for a formal apology from Kwarteng and the immediate retraction of the false claims, urging all parties to work together towards a peaceful and respectful resolution of the Bawku chieftaincy issue.
