Doctors at Devnandani Hospital in India were left stunned after successfully removing 50 foreign objects from the stomach of a 40-year-old man. The patient, a resident of Hapur, was admitted on September 17 with severe abdominal pain, vomiting, and physical weakness.
Upon conducting an ultrasound, X-ray, and CT scan, medical personnel discovered a large number of metallic and plastic items lodged inside the man's stomach. The surgical team, led by Dr. Shyam Kumar, performed a five-hour operation and extracted 29 steel spoons, 19 toothbrushes, and 2 pens.
“When we performed the scans, we were shocked to see so many foreign bodies. I’ve never encountered a case like this before,” said Dr. Kumar.
Further examination revealed that the objects had been deliberately broken into smaller parts before ingestion. The surgical team recovered 28 spoon handles and 21 headless toothbrush shafts, making the case even more unusual.
Background and Cause
Hospital officials reported that the patient had a history of substance abuse and had recently been admitted to a de-addiction center in Ghaziabad. According to the man, he began swallowing household items in protest after being left at the facility.
“I would pick them up and go to the washroom to swallow them,” the man confessed following the operation.
Possible Psychiatric Condition
Mental health experts believe the patient may be suffering from a psychiatric condition known as pica, a disorder characterized by the compulsive consumption of non-food items. While pica is more commonly diagnosed in children, it can also occur in adults, particularly those dealing with stress, psychological disorders, or nutritional deficiencies.
The patient is currently under medical observation and is said to be recovering well after the rare and life-threatening ordeal.
