Ama Pratt: No Political Immunity for NDC MP if Found Complicit in Galamsey Attack

 

Political commentator and activist Ama Pratt has taken a firm stance on the ongoing investigation involving NDC Member of Parliament (MP) Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, who has been linked to an alleged attack connected to illegal mining activities (galamsey) at Bronikrom near Hwidiem.

Speaking on Metro TV in a discussion monitored by MyNewsGh, Pratt emphasized that political affiliation must not shield anyone from accountability.

“I wanted the facts to come out first,” she explained. “When this issue first broke, neither the MP nor the minister had spoken. But if investigations confirm the allegations, nobody should be protected. This fight is not for party members — it is for Ghana.”

The alleged attack occurred on Saturday, November 1, 2025, when the NAIMOS Director and his team were reportedly assaulted while attempting to intercept illegal miners. Police later retrieved a Smith & Wesson pistol, ammunition, two magazines, an unregistered Range Rover and Toyota RAV4, as well as several mobile phones from the scene.

Pratt commended the government’s decisive approach, noting that President John Dramani Mahama’s position on the matter sends a strong message of accountability.

“Nobody will be shielded if found culpable,” she stressed, applauding the Speaker of Parliament’s swift approval for police investigations as a sign of true commitment to justice. “This is how you dismantle a network — you do not defend your own when they are under suspicion.”

According to her, this marks a departure from the past, where individuals accused of similar offenses were often linked to those in power.

“Under the previous administration, people involved in these same activities were close to authority — and we all saw it,” she noted. “What we are witnessing now is a reset. Institutions are being allowed to function independently, and that is how a nation progresses.”

Pratt concluded by urging Ghanaians to view the fight against illegal mining as a national responsibility, not a partisan one.
