Jim Iyke Reflects on Being Kicked Out for Choosing Acting Over Law

 

Nollywood actor Jim Iyke has opened up about the emotional challenges he faced early in life after choosing to follow his passion for acting instead of pursuing a career in law, as his father had wished.

In a candid interview with Chude Jideonwo, monitored by MyNewsGh, the award-winning actor recounted how his decision to pursue acting at the age of 18 led to his father expelling him from their home.

“I had just finished university at 18, and my father wanted me to become a lawyer,” Chude recalled during the interview.

Jim responded, “Yes, bro, you don’t want to see the master plan he had for me. I told him no — and the price for that decision was being kicked out of the house.”

Jim admitted that his choice was driven more by a desire for independence than by a clear vision of the future.

“I wasn’t doing it because I could see the future. I just wanted to rebel. Everything I had done up to that point was for him. I didn’t see my dream or purpose in his plan,” he shared.

The actor explained that his father’s disappointment stemmed from fear and practicality — a mindset typical of many parents.

“He came as a typical parent with the idea that, ‘You must do this or you’ll waste your life.’ But I just wanted the chance to fail and rise again on my own terms,” Jim said.

Reflecting on that period, the actor now believes that his decision was crucial to his personal and professional growth.

“It’s dangerous to create a fixed roadmap for a child. Sometimes you have to let them fail forward — that’s where courage and resilience are born,” he added.
