Achimota Circuit Court Sets December 17 Trial Date for Man Accused of Stabbing Firefighter

 

The Achimota Circuit Court will commence the trial of 21-year-old Sampson Azumah on December 17, 2025. Azumah is accused of stabbing a firefighter at Adjiriganor during a late-night emergency response.

According to prosecutors, Azumah allegedly stabbed the firefighter with a screwdriver after claiming that water used in extinguishing a fire had splashed on him. He has been charged with causing harm and has pleaded not guilty.

During a Case Management Conference held on December 3, 2025, Chief Inspector Emmanuel Addo informed the court that three witness statements had been filed and served on Azumah, who currently has no legal representation. The presiding judge instructed that the statements be read and clearly explained to the accused. When Azumah asked who would carry out the explanation, the judge directed the court Registrar to do so before the next hearing date.

Prosecution documents identify the complainant as Leslie Adjie Tetteh, a fire officer stationed at Teshie. Azumah, who is unemployed, is said to reside in Adjiriganor, East Legon.

Investigators reported that on November 14, 2025, at around 11:30 p.m., Tetteh—who is attached to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) headquarters—was part of a team responding to a fire outbreak at the residence of actress Yvonne Okoro. A number of bystanders reportedly gathered at the scene, with some allegedly pelting the firefighters with stones.

After the fire had been contained, Tetteh was packing up a hose when Azumah allegedly confronted him, accusing him of splashing water intentionally. Azumah is said to have pulled a concealed screwdriver from a waist bag, stabbed Tetteh in the left arm, and then fled.

Tetteh was taken to the hospital for treatment, after which he filed a report at the East Legon Police Station. A medical form was subsequently issued for further evaluation.

Azumah was arrested on November 17, 2025. Police say he admitted to the offence, and the screwdriver believed to have been used in the attack was retrieved.

Greater Accra Regional Chief Fire Officer, Rashid Nisawu, stated that the GNFS would continue to follow the court proceedings closely. He emphasized that pursuing the case to its conclusion was essential to ensure that the public respects the work of firefighters and does not take the Service for granted.
