Ahantaman Girls SHS Headmistress Blames Poor WASSCE Results on Examination Malpractice, Advocates for Hard Work

The Headmistress of Ahantaman Girls Senior High School, Mrs. Ernestina Kankam, has attributed the disappointing results in the 2025 WASSCE to widespread examination malpractice and a decline in students' commitment to academic diligence.

Commenting on the national exam outcomes, Mrs. Kankam expressed that the results were unsurprising, describing them as "a true reflection of the students’ capabilities."

She pointed out the increasing prevalence of dishonest practices, such as students purchasing exam questions, sneaking answers into examination halls, and using leaked materials. She revealed that mobile phones are often confiscated from candidates, only to uncover exam questions or solved answers stored on the devices.

"Sometimes, when we seize their phones and check, we find exam questions on them. As far as I’m concerned, if I find a phone on you, I report it to WAEC, and all your results will be canceled," she warned.

Mrs. Kankam emphasized that Ahantaman Girls SHS has implemented stringent security measures during exams, making it difficult for students to smuggle unauthorized materials. "When some students are caught, we ask them to remove their passcodes, and we go through the phones. Sometimes the questions are exact; other times, we find solved versions of the expected topics," she explained.

She expressed concern over the growing reliance on “apo” (leaked exam questions) and revealed that some students even write answers on their bodies, such as their thighs and chests, in an attempt to cheat.

"The problem is that today’s students are not interested in learning, and this situation is exacerbated by the ‘apo’ culture. In some instances, schools even collaborate to assist students during the exams," she lamented.

Mrs. Kankam urged students to return to disciplined study habits, emphasizing that genuine effort and thorough preparation remain the most reliable path to academic success.

"We advise students to study hard and do their best according to their ability. It’s far better than resorting to cheating," she concluded.
