The Headmistress of Ahantaman Girls Senior High School (SHS), Mrs. Ernestina Kankam, has revealed a disturbing case of examination malpractice involving a student who, despite achieving an impressive Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) aggregate of 14, was unable to write her own name upon arrival at the school.
Speaking on the factors contributing to poor student performance in the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), Mrs. Kankam recounted how the incident came to light.
“I was in my office when the Economics teacher walked in with the student’s examination script,” she shared. “At first, I thought it was something minor we could assist with. However, the teacher and the academic assistant informed me that the situation was more serious than I had imagined. The student had simply scribbled on the answer sheet; she couldn’t even write her own name.”
Upon further investigation, it was revealed that the student admitted a teacher had written the BECE on her behalf, raising significant concerns about the integrity of the examination process.
Mrs. Kankam pointed to this incident as a stark example of how systemic malpractice at the basic education level can severely impact academic performance in secondary school. She noted that such malpractice not only undermines students' abilities but also erodes their confidence as they progress through their education.
