AMA Launches Education Support Fund for Children of Fishermen and Farmers

 

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has announced the establishment of an education support fund for the children of farmers and fishermen in the metropolis.

The initiative, which was launched with a seed donation of GH¢20,000 from Alfred Nii Kotey Ashie, the Member of Parliament for Odododiodioo Constituency, aims to ease the financial burden on families in the farming and fishing sectors, ensuring their children can access quality education.

The fund was officially launched during the 41st National Farmers and Fishermen’s Day celebration, held at the AMA forecourt on Friday, December 5. The event recognized the vital contributions of farmers and fishermen to national development, while also highlighting the importance of supporting their children's educational aspirations.

Addressing Educational Inequality

Mr. Allotey explained that the fund is designed to provide targeted financial support, helping children from farming and fishing backgrounds access school fees, scholarships, and other educational assistance. The initiative is particularly aimed at ensuring that no child is deprived of education due to the economic limitations of their parents’ occupations.

“The fund is not just about relief—it’s also about changing the narrative,” Allotey said. “We want to show the younger generation that farming and fishing are not just viable careers, but can also offer a dignified, hopeful future for those willing to pursue them.”

A Broader Commitment to Farmers and Fishermen

In his address, the MCE emphasized that the fund complements broader government efforts to support farmers, especially under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama. He stated that the AMA is proud to contribute to this national vision by offering practical and targeted support to the children of farmers and fishermen in the city, thus ensuring they are not left behind in the pursuit of education.

The launch of the fund is expected to create more opportunities for young people in farming and fishing communities, offering them the chance for a better future and encouraging a renewed interest in these important industries.
