Davido Reveals How Miscommunication with Omah Lay Sparked Grammy-Nominated Hit ‘With You’

Afrobeat superstar Davido has shared the story behind his collaboration with Omah Lay, revealing that a simple miscommunication almost prevented the duo from working together.

Before collaborating, Omah Lay had publicly admitted that he thought Davido “hated” him. The misunderstanding came to light when Davido played Omah Lay’s songs during a livestream with American streamer Kai Cenat in Lagos. Surprised by the shoutout, Omah Lay tweeted that he had always assumed Davido disliked him.

Davido quickly reached out via direct message, asking why he would think that, since they had never met. In a trending video, Davido explained how the interaction led to their musical collaboration:
"Kai Cenat came to Nigeria and I was driving him to the club. Omah Lay’s song came up, and he asked, ‘Who is this?’ I said, ‘Oh! This is Omah Lay, he is hot.’"

From there, they exchanged numbers, shared ideas, and recorded four songs together, with Omah Lay eventually selecting With You as the track to release. The song has since become a standout on Davido’s fifth album, 5ive, and earned a nomination for Best African Music Performance at the 2026 Grammy Awards.

Fans have praised Davido for supporting emerging artists and staying humble, while Omah Lay received accolades for openly sharing his initial doubts. What began as a simple tweet and misunderstanding blossomed into a Grammy-nominated hit, demonstrating how communication and mutual respect can create musical magic.
