Day 5: Team Ghana Makes History in Sitting Volleyball, Dominates Wheelchair Tennis

Team Ghana delivered another outstanding performance on Day 5 of the inaugural West Africa Zone A & B Para Games in Abeokuta, Nigeria, securing multiple podium finishes across various disciplines.

Ghana’s Sitting Volleyball team made history by clinching a bronze medal in their debut international appearance. Under the leadership of head coach Seidu Ajanako, the team—comprising Rashad Mohammed Rahmat, Faisal Sey, Nfodzo Patrick, Eric Agyekum, Fadiga Mohammed, Christian Asamoah, Fatawu Chambers, Alfred Asiedu Bosu, and Christian Fiashide—bounced back from a loss to Nigeria to secure the country’s first-ever medal in the sport.

In Para Table Tennis, the duo of Abdul Aziz Abbey and Isaac Ampofo added another bronze to Ghana’s medal tally in the doubles event.

Para Shooting also contributed to the success, with Emmanuel Amobire winning gold in the rifle category. Ghana's Wheelchair Basketball teams continued to shine, claiming silver medals in both the Women’s division and the mixed category.

Wheelchair Tennis proved to be one of Ghana’s strongest disciplines, with the team securing six medals. Bridget Nartey earned a bronze in the women’s singles, while Stacy Konadu Mensah won silver. The pair teamed up for another silver in the women’s doubles.

In the men’s doubles, Daniel Laryea and Bernard Yawson secured silver, while Laryea partnered with Mensah to win bronze in the mixed doubles. Wasila Baba also impressed, taking silver in the quad event.

Para Athletics contributed five more medals to Ghana’s growing tally. Addai Hayford earned his second medal of the Games with silver in the T46/47 400m final, clocking 53.05 seconds, while Koffie Bright finished third in 58.05 seconds. In the T53/54 1500m final, Hussien Abdul Gafar claimed bronze with a time of 4:41.17. Veteran athlete Botsyo Nkegbe took silver in the T53/54 400m final, and Kwubetegr Diana added a bronze in the T46/47/38 women’s 400m final with a time of 75.28 seconds.

With 16 medals secured on Day 4, Ghana matched that total again on Day 5, bringing the confirmed medal count to 32 thus far.

The inaugural West Africa Zone A & B Para Games continue in Abeokuta and will conclude on December 3, 2025.
