Leadership Should Be About Service, Not Luxury – Brigadier General Joseph Nunoo-Mensah

Brigadier General (Rtd) Joseph Nunoo-Mensah has strongly criticized modern leadership for prioritizing luxury over service to society. The retired general expressed concerns that today’s leaders are too focused on material wealth and not enough on the well-being of the people they serve.

In a candid interview on *The KSM Show*, Nunoo-Mensah shared an eye-opening example from his own life: "This house you are sitting in, I built it with less than 50 pounds," he stated. "People might not believe it, but it’s true."

He emphasized that, during his time in public service, he deliberately avoided indulgence even when it was accessible. "Why should I buy a Land Cruiser when my old car could still serve its purpose?" he asked, reflecting on his simple approach to life and leadership.

Honesty and integrity were fundamental values instilled in him from an early age, which guided his handling of public funds throughout his career. "If money was more than I deserved, I rejected it," he said. "Today, people will even ask for more."

Nunoo-Mensah also spoke about his personal commitment to community development. He mentioned how he funded schools, boreholes, and other facilities out of his own pocket, without seeking any recognition or political gain. "I never stole from anyone," he asserted. "I did it because I wanted a better society."

For him, leadership is about caring for others, not accumulating wealth. "If you see poverty and it doesn’t disturb you, then something is wrong," he concluded, urging a shift in mindset toward more selfless and service-oriented leadership.
