Real Madrid secured a 2–0 victory over Sevilla on Saturday evening in La Liga, with goals from Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappé sealing an important win at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Bellingham opened the scoring shortly before half-time, rising highest to meet a curling Rodrygo free-kick and glancing a header into the corner of the net. The goal gave Madrid a deserved lead after a tightly contested first half.
Mbappé then took centre stage late in the game. With four minutes remaining, the French forward calmly converted a penalty to double Madrid’s advantage and put the result beyond doubt. The goal was significant, as it saw Mbappé equal Cristiano Ronaldo’s Real Madrid record for the most goals scored in a calendar year, reaching 59 goals.
The victory strengthened Real Madrid’s grip on second place in the La Liga standings, although Carlo Ancelotti’s side have played one game more than league leaders Barcelona.
According to talkSPORT, Ronaldo originally set the landmark record in 2013, and it has taken 12 years for another Madrid player to reach the same milestone, underlining the enduring greatness of the Portuguese superstar.
After scoring, Mbappé paid tribute to Ronaldo by celebrating in the iconic “Siu” style before blowing a kiss to the camera. Speaking after the match, the France captain expressed his admiration for his idol.
“It’s incredible, in my first full year, to do what Cristiano did,” Mbappé said, as quoted by the Associated Press. “He’s my idol and the best player in the history of Real Madrid. My celebration was for him. He helped me adapt here, and now I can help Madrid win games with my goals. I wanted to share this moment with him.”
He added that he enjoys a strong personal relationship with Ronaldo and wished him, along with all Real Madrid fans, a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Mbappé later reinforced his message on Instagram, posting: “Believe in your dreams. Big up 👑🐐 @cristiano.”
Mbappé’s form during the 2025/26 season has been outstanding. According to Transfermarkt, he has scored 29 goals and provided four assists in 27 appearances across all competitions. In La Liga alone, he has registered 17 goals and four assists in 17 matches, directly contributing to 21 goals and averaging a goal per game.
His remarkable consistency continues to place him among the world’s most lethal forwards and further cements his growing legacy at Real Madrid, as he follows in the footsteps of one of the club’s greatest-ever players.
