The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations (NAIMOS) Taskforce has arrested two individuals during a coordinated operation targeting illegal mining activities at Subrisu in the Western Region on December 8, 2025.
According to the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the suspects were found operating two excavators and other mining equipment near the Subri River at Bekwai Subrisu. Their activities, along with those of other illegal miners in the area, have caused severe pollution of the river and extensive destruction of nearby farmlands and forest reserves.
During the operation, the taskforce dismantled several metallic gold-trapping platforms used by the miners and destroyed three heavy-duty water pumping machines to halt further illegal activity. NAIMOS described the raid as a necessary intervention to prevent continued environmental degradation and to safeguard vital water bodies.
The two suspects, identified as Chinese nationals, have been transferred to Accra and handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) for further action.
NAIMOS stated that the Subrisu operation forms part of its ongoing nationwide surprise clampdowns aimed at restoring order in the mining sector and protecting Ghana’s natural resources. The taskforce reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening enforcement efforts to promote responsible and sustainable mining practices.
