A New York pastor has surprised members of her congregation after publicly revealing that she is transitioning and will now identify as a woman, using she/her pronouns.
Reverend Phil Phaneuf, 51, made the announcement during a Sunday service at the North Chili United Methodist Church (UMC). Wearing a rainbow stole, she shared that she has been undergoing her gender transition for some time.
“I am joyful to announce that I am transitioning. I am affirming and telling all of you that I am transgender,” she said. “The best way to explain this is that I’m not becoming a woman — I’m giving up pretending to be a man.”
As part of her transition, the pastor revealed her new name, Phillippa Faye Phaneuf, though she will continue to be addressed as Reverend Phil. She also reassured the congregation that she would not enforce strict correction regarding pronouns, acknowledging that any mistakes would not be made with ill intent.
Phaneuf explained that the primary changes ahead would be physical, noting that she has already been on hormone replacement therapy for approximately three months. She emphasized that her dedication to her faith and ministry remains unchanged.
“My commitment to Jesus Christ and to the ministry will remain the same,” she assured the church.
A video of the announcement has been widely circulated online, drawing significant attention and sparking conversation.
The church continues to support Reverend Phil as she navigates this new chapter in her life.
