A Scienta vehicle attempting a risky overtake crashed into an oncoming Metro Mass Transit bus, leaving two dead and multiple injured, including three children.
Two people are dead and several others injured following a horrific road accident that occurred Sunday evening at Assin Fosu in Ghana's Central Region. The collision involved a private Scienta vehicle and a Metro Mass Transit (MMT) bus, and has once again raised urgent concerns about reckless driving on the nation's highways.
The incident took place around 7 p.m. on Sunday when the Scienta, traveling from Cape Coast toward Kumasi, reportedly attempted to overtake another vehicle that had slowed down to make a turn. In a dangerous maneuver, the driver moved into the opposite lane and collided head-on with an oncoming MMT bus traveling from Kumasi.
The Victims and Injuries
The driver of the Scienta and one passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. Five other occupants of the vehicle sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
Tragically, three children who were walking along the roadside were also struck by the MMT bus after the impact caused it to veer off the road and crash into the wall of Obiri Yeboah Senior High School. The wall subsequently collapsed, but the children have since been admitted to the hospital and are reported to be in stable condition.
The driver of the MMT bus, William Aboagye, confirmed that none of the passengers aboard his vehicle lost their lives, though several were shaken by the sudden and violent collision.
Police Investigation Underway
Central North Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) Commander, ASP Wonder Lumor, provided details of the incident to the press. According to his preliminary findings, the Scienta driver was attempting to overtake a vehicle that had slowed down to turn. The overtaking maneuver brought the Scienta directly into the path of the oncoming bus, leaving the MMT driver with no time to avoid the crash.
"The vehicle being overtaken had slowed down to make a turn, and the Scienta driver moved into the opposite lane without ensuring the road was clear," ASP Lumor explained. "This resulted in the head-on collision with the Metro Mass bus."
The police have since launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident, and further details are expected to emerge as authorities piece together the sequence of events.
A Growing Concern on Ghana's Roads
This tragic incident adds to a troubling pattern of fatal road crashes across Ghana, many of which are attributed to risky overtaking, excessive speed, and driver inattention. Busy highways, where motorists share narrow stretches with pedestrians and other vulnerable road users, have become hotspots for such collisions.
Road safety experts have repeatedly warned that overtaking on Ghanaian roads is one of the leading causes of fatal accidents, particularly when drivers fail to properly assess oncoming traffic or misjudge the speed of approaching vehicles. The MMT bus, being a large passenger vehicle, suffered significant damage in the crash, but its driver's quick reaction may have prevented even greater loss of life.
Authorities Renew Calls for Caution
In the wake of this tragedy, police and road safety officials have renewed their appeal to motorists to exercise extreme caution, especially when overtaking. Drivers are being urged to only attempt overtaking when the road ahead is visibly clear, to obey speed limits, and to remain vigilant for pedestrians and other road users.
"The loss of two lives in a single incident is deeply saddening," ASP Lumor added. "We continue to advise all drivers to prioritize safety over haste. A few minutes saved are not worth the cost of a life."
Community in Mourning
The Assin Fosu community is in shock following the accident, with local residents expressing grief and calling for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations. The collapsed wall of the school has also raised concerns about the vulnerability of public infrastructure near busy roads.
As families mourn their loved ones and the injured recover in hospital, this incident serves as a grim reminder of the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures, better driver education, and stricter penalties for reckless driving across Ghana.
The police have assured the public that they will thoroughly investigate the matter and ensure that appropriate action is taken. They have also appealed to anyone with additional information about the crash to come forward to assist with the inquiry.
This report will be updated as more details become available.
