No Christmas Break for Police Officers This Year

Deputy Minister for the Interior, Mr. Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, has announced the suspension of annual leave for police officers this Christmas season. Officers currently on leave will be recalled as part of an effort to strengthen the operational capacity of the Ghana Police Service (GPS) during the festive period.

This move is aimed at ensuring heightened security for both citizens and visitors throughout the holiday season.

While addressing Parliament, Mr. Terlabi confirmed that all annual leave for officers has been put on hold and additional personnel would be deployed to bolster security operations nationwide. As part of these efforts, 40 multi-purpose armoured vehicles will be sent to key crime hotspots to enhance police presence and deter criminal activities.

Increased patrols, including both day and night mobile units, will be deployed along highways, and snap checks will be conducted at business districts, transport terminals, beaches, and entertainment venues.

Regional intelligence units have also been directed to bolster community-based information networks, monitor emerging threats, ensure security at social events, and deploy rapid response teams to manage large crowds and emergencies.

Furthermore, targeted operations will take place in high-crime areas, with close coordination between the police and other security agencies to maintain public safety.

Given the uptick in commercial activities during the Christmas season, additional uniformed officers will be assigned to major markets and trading hubs. This initiative is a collaboration with Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) and market associations, with officers conducting fire safety inspections, addressing illegal electrical connections, and assisting financial institutions and operators.

To address potential traffic congestion and reduce road accidents, the Motor Traffic and Transport Division (MTTD) of the GPS will deploy personnel along highways and key urban traffic areas across the country.

Mr. Terlabi emphasized that these measures are designed to reduce incidents of robbery, assault, and theft, manage traffic flow, ensure the safe transportation of goods and people, and create a secure environment for Christmas celebrations, ensuring a peaceful and enjoyable holiday season for all.
