In the wake of Ghana’s disappointing 2025 WASSCE results, Nii Lante Vanderpuye, the National Coordinator for the District Road Improvement Programme, has expressed serious concerns over a growing issue: the negative impact of social media and technology on students' focus and academic performance.
During an interview, Vanderpuye emphasized how the increasing reliance on digital entertainment is distracting young people from their studies. He noted that many households are struggling to adapt to the fast-paced changes brought by technology, with children spending more time on their phones and tablets than on their educational materials.
“This decline in performance is no surprise to me. As a nation, we’ve allowed modern trends and technological innovations to influence us. Our children are not prioritizing what will truly help them concentrate on their education,” Vanderpuye remarked, pointing to a long-standing shift in the way students approach learning.
His comments come at a time when education stakeholders are deeply concerned about the alarming drop in academic performance. In this year’s WASSCE, more than 6,000 candidates had their results cancelled for possessing unauthorized materials, while over 1,000 others remain under investigation. Additionally, many students had their subject results withheld, with Core Mathematics showing the steepest decline—falling from over 300,000 passes in 2024 to just above 200,000 in 2025.
With fewer than half of the candidates achieving the grades necessary for tertiary education, many families are now anxiously questioning their children's future prospects.
Vanderpuye suggests that a shift is needed in how technology is integrated into education. He believes that students should be taught to use digital tools in ways that enhance learning, both at home and in school, so that education can once again become the central focus.
