Former presidential candidate and human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, has strongly criticized the recent United States airstrike targeting suspected Islamic State (ISIS) fighters in northwest Nigeria, describing the action as reckless and a threat to the country’s sovereignty.
Sowore warned that the operation could undermine Nigeria’s independence and destabilize the region. According to him, foreign military intervention on Nigerian soil, regardless of intent, sets a dangerous precedent.
“Nobody should be celebrating this. It is an imperialist move,” Sowore said, attributing responsibility to the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. He added that while international cooperation is acceptable, direct military action by foreign forces within Nigeria’s borders is not.
### Foreign Military Action ‘Unacceptable’
Sowore emphasized that Nigeria could benefit from technical or logistical support from allies, but stressed that foreign troops carrying out attacks inside the country is unacceptable.
“The United States can assist the Nigerian military in many ways, but U.S. forces conducting strikes inside Nigeria is extremely dangerous, reckless, and wrong,” he stated. He further described the incident as “a sad day for African liberation and independence.”
### Trump Confirms Strike on ISIS Targets
The airstrike followed a statement by President Donald Trump, who announced on his Truth Social platform that U.S. forces had carried out a “powerful and deadly strike” against ISIS operatives in northwest Nigeria. Trump claimed the targeted fighters were responsible for the killing of innocent Christians and said the operation was carried out under his direct authorization as Commander-in-Chief.
He also warned that continued attacks by terrorist groups against civilians, particularly Christians, would attract further consequences.
### AFRICOM Acknowledges Operation
The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) later confirmed the airstrike in a post on X, stating that the operation was conducted “at the request of Nigerian authorities” and resulted in the deaths of multiple ISIS fighters. U.S. Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, also acknowledged Nigeria’s cooperation, suggesting that additional actions could follow, though no specific details were provided.
The strike reportedly took place in Sokoto State, despite an initial misspelling referring to it as “Soboto state.”
### Panic in Sokoto Community After Explosion
Meanwhile, residents of Jabo village in Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto State reported widespread panic on Christmas night after a loud explosion was heard in the area. Eyewitnesses said the blast, believed to be linked to the airstrike, caused fear among villagers.
“The explosion happened suddenly at night and created serious panic, but thankfully it did not hit where people were gathered,” a resident said.
The incident has continued to generate debate across Nigeria, with concerns growing over national sovereignty, civilian safety, and the implications of foreign military involvement in the country’s internal security challenges.
