Speaker of parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has assured journalists that under his leadership, Parliament will not pass laws aimed at suppressing media freedom.
The assurance was made in a speech delivered on his behalf by Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, Member of Parliament for La Dade-Kotopon and Deputy Minister for Local Government, at the Ghana Journalists Association’s (GJA) 3rd Annual Dinner Night in Accra on December 23, 2025.
Mr. Bagbin acknowledged growing concerns over the misuse of digital and electronic communications laws, which some claim are being applied in ways that intimidate journalists and undermine press freedom. He emphasized that any legislation that could negatively impact media rights would be reviewed.
His comments come amid increasing unease within the media fraternity following incidents of arrests, interrogations, and legal actions against journalists involved in online reporting and commentary.
During the event, several media professionals shared personal experiences that they felt were a direct result of their journalistic duties. The GJA reiterated its stance that while responsible journalism is vital, any regulatory measures must not infringe on the constitutional protections afforded to the press.
Speaker Bagbin reaffirmed that democratic governance requires a delicate balance between national security and the freedom of expression. He stressed that an independent and fearless media is a cornerstone of Ghana’s democracy and vital to its progress.
