Swedru Businessman Abu Trica Appears in Court Over US Extradition Request

Swedru-based businessman and socialite Abu Trica has appeared before the Gbese District Court in Accra in connection with an extradition request from the United States, following his recent arrest over alleged fraud-related offences.

Abu Trica, whose real name is Frederick Kumi, also known as Emmanuel Kojo Baah Obeng, was arrested on Thursday, December 11, 2025, in a joint operation involving the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Ghanaian security agencies. His court appearance on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, marked the beginning of formal extradition proceedings.

According to an unsealed indictment issued by the United States Department of Justice, Abu Trica is facing charges including conspiracy to commit wire fraud, money laundering conspiracy, and forfeiture specifications. If convicted, he could face a prison sentence of up to 20 years.

In a statement released after his arrest, the US Justice Department alleged that Abu Trica was part of an organised criminal syndicate that targeted elderly victims in the United States through romance scam schemes. The syndicate is believed to have been operating since 2023 and is accused of defrauding victims of more than US$8 million.

Investigators claim the group used artificial intelligence software to create false identities and establish intimate online relationships with victims, primarily through social media and online dating platforms. After gaining their trust, the suspects allegedly solicited money under various pretences, including medical emergencies, travel expenses, and fictitious investment opportunities.

Authorities further alleged that Abu Trica played a role in distributing the proceeds of the crimes from the United States to Ghana and other countries.

The investigation was led by the FBI’s Cleveland Division, with support from Ghana’s Attorney General’s Office, the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), the Ghana Police Service, the Cyber Security Authority (CSA), the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), and the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).

Reports also indicate that Abu Trica’s girlfriend and mother of his child, Abena Oforiwaa, popularly known as Queenie, was initially arrested to assist with investigations. She was later released following legal intervention by lawyer and activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor and his firm.

Footage shared on social media on December 23 showed Abu Trica arriving at the Gbese High Court under heavy security. His face was covered as officers escorted him into the courtroom in handcuffs. He was dressed in a black shirt and cap. Two alleged associates, identified as Lord Eshun and Bernard Aidoo, were also escorted into court, though their faces were not concealed.

The case has drawn significant public attention as extradition proceedings continue and Ghanaian authorities cooperate with their US counterparts in the ongoing investigation.
