University of Ghana Maintains Admission Cut-Offs Despite WASSCE Decline

The University of Ghana (UG) has confirmed that it will uphold its admission cut-off points for the 2025/2026 academic year, despite a significant decline in results from the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The 2025 WASSCE saw a notable drop in performance, with Core Mathematics registering the most substantial decline. The number of A1–C6 passes fell from 305,132 in 2024 to 209,068 in 2025, a decrease of over 96,000. The overall pass rate was just 48.73%, meaning more than half of the candidates did not meet the required grades for university admission.

Additionally, nearly one in four candidates failed both Core Mathematics and Social Studies, raising concerns about their eligibility for tertiary education in the upcoming academic year.

In an interview on December 2, UG’s Pro Vice Chancellor, Prof. Gordon Awandare, confirmed that the university had received the results from students who purchased awaiting results forms and would proceed with the admission process for those who meet the requirements.

However, Prof. Awandare reiterated that the university’s admission cut-off points would remain unchanged in order to uphold academic standards. He advised students who did not meet the cut-off to consider re-sitting the WASSCE to improve their results.

“At the University of Ghana, every year we have many more students meeting the cut-off but not getting admitted due to limited space. So, it’s unlikely that we will lower the cut-off to accommodate more students,” Prof. Awandare said. “We advise those who are determined to study at Legon to resit the necessary papers, improve their aggregates, and try again.”
