A Nigerian woman has sparked widespread discussion on social media after revealing why she discarded a portion of Christmas rice she received from a neighbour.
The woman, identified on TikTok as @ritafortune5, shared a video showing herself disposing of the fried rice in a nylon bag. According to her, the food had spoiled by the next morning, leaving her with no option but to throw it away.
In the video, she explained that although the rice was given to her on Christmas Day, she was unable to eat it that same day. By the time she woke up the following morning, the fried rice had already gone bad. She emphasized that her decision was based solely on food safety concerns, not ingratitude.
“This is how some of the Christmas rice you gave to your neighbour yesterday ended up this morning,” she wrote in the caption. “I only threw it away because it was fried rice, and before I woke up today, it had already spoiled.”
The post quickly went viral, amassing over 41,000 likes and attracting numerous reactions from TikTok users. While some viewers criticized her for accepting food she might not consume, others defended her, noting that excess food is common during festive periods and that spoilage can occur quickly, especially with fried meals.
Several users pointed out that the situation should not necessarily be considered food waste, as the woman had intended to eat the rice but was prevented by its condition. Others, however, advised people to avoid collecting food they may not be able to consume, given the current economic realities.
The video continues to generate mixed reactions, highlighting differing perspectives on food sharing, preservation, and gratitude during festive celebrations.
