A Nigerian woman has received widespread praise on social media after she returned ₦300,000 that was mistakenly transferred to her bank account, choosing integrity over personal need.
Sharing her experience on X (formerly Twitter) via her handle, @cocoofabuja, the Abuja-based lady disclosed that she woke up to an unexpected credit alert of ₦300,000 from an unknown sender. Although surprised by the alert, she immediately knew the money was not meant for her.
She admitted that she urgently needed ₦200,000 at the time to resolve personal issues and briefly felt tempted to use part of the funds. However, she explained that her conscience would not allow her to spend money that did not belong to her.
Later in the day, she received a phone call from a distressed woman who explained that the transfer had been made in error and that the money was intended to pay for her mother’s hospital bills. Without delay, the Abuja resident requested the necessary account details and promptly refunded the full amount.
Reflecting on the experience, she humorously noted that her account balance returned to its “default” state after the refund, but emphasized that doing the right thing mattered more to her than personal gain.
The story has resonated with many online users, who applauded her honesty and compassion. For many, her action served as a reminder that integrity and empathy remain powerful values, even in moments of financial difficulty.
