Agya Koo Faces Public Backlash After Raising Concerns Over Poor Road Conditions

Ghanaian actor and Kumawood star Agya Koo has come under intense public criticism following his complaints about the deteriorating condition of the Akyem Edubiase main road.

The actor recently took to social media to share his experience after travelling on the road, describing it as dangerous and unfit for motorists. According to Agya Koo, large heaps of sand have accumulated along sections of the road, narrowing the stretch and increasing the risk of accidents. He called on the relevant authorities to act swiftly to prevent potential loss of lives.

Akyem Edubiase is located in the Akyemansa District of the Ofoase Ayirebi area, which falls under the political leadership of Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the former Minister for Information and Minister for Works and Housing. Mr Oppong Nkrumah retained his parliamentary seat in the 2024 general elections on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), defeating the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Alfred Osei-Poku, by a margin of about 5,000 votes.

While Agya Koo’s comments drew attention to genuine concerns about road safety, they also sparked widespread backlash online. Many social media users criticised the actor, questioning the timing and motive behind his remarks, especially given his known affiliation with the NPP. His comments come just a few months after the NDC assumed power following the 2024 elections.

Several netizens accused the actor of hypocrisy, arguing that he failed to raise similar concerns when his preferred political party was in government. Others suggested that the road had been in a poor state for years and accused him of politicising an old problem for propaganda purposes.

Despite the criticism, the issue has reignited public discussion about the state of road infrastructure in parts of the country and the need for urgent maintenance to ensure the safety of road users.

The incident highlights how public figures’ statements, particularly those with political undertones, can quickly become flashpoints for national debate, especially in a politically charged environment.
