Fresh legal developments have intensified the tragedy surrounding the fatal car accident involving British boxing champion Anthony Joshua in Nigeria. The driver of the vehicle has now been formally charged, days after the crash claimed the lives of two of Joshua’s close associates and left the boxer injured. Investigators have cited reckless driving as a key factor in the case.
Anthony Joshua’s driver, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, appeared before Sagamu Magistrates’ Court on Friday, January 2, 2026. Prosecutors filed four charges against him: causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care, and operating a vehicle without a valid license, according to a police source cited by the BBC.
Mr. Kayode was granted bail set at 5,000,000 Naira (approximately GH¢36,506) while the conditions are processed. The case has been adjourned to January 20, 2026.
Details of the Accident
The accident occurred on Monday, December 29, 2025, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State. Anthony Joshua was traveling as a passenger in a Lexus Jeep when the vehicle collided with a stationary truck. His personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and strength coach, Sina Ghami, tragically died at the scene. Joshua sustained injuries and was hospitalized but discharged on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, after receiving treatment.
Following his discharge, Joshua visited the funeral home with his mother to pay respects, in what officials described as a “heavy-hearted” moment. Authorities from Ogun and Lagos states confirmed in a joint statement that Joshua visited the funeral home where the bodies were being prepared for repatriation.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as horrifying, emphasizing how narrowly the boxer avoided further tragedy. Just hours before the accident, Joshua had shared a light-hearted video on social media of himself playing table tennis with Ayodele—a moment that has since taken on painful significance.
Public Reaction and Tributes
Tributes continue to pour in for Ayodele and Ghami, highlighting the profound impact of the loss on Joshua and his team. Earlier reports noted Joshua’s immediate words following the crash: “I feel pain all over,” reflecting the severity of his injuries and the traumatic nature of the incident.
As legal proceedings move forward, public attention remains focused on the court case, while fans and colleagues honor the memories of those lost.
