A long-standing dispute between the youth of Mankessim and Ekumfi Eyisam erupted into deadly violence on Saturday, January 3, 2026, leaving one person dead and several others suffering from horrific injuries, including severe acid burns. The Mfantseman Municipality was thrown into chaos as the violent clash forced residents and traders to flee for safety.
The deceased, identified as Mr. Wisdom, was reportedly shot dead during the height of the confrontation. In addition to the fatal shooting, multiple victims sustained severe chemical burns from acid attacks and deep cutlass wounds.
The Beginning of the Conflict
The origins of the violence date back to New Year's Day when a disagreement between youth from both towns reportedly broke out at Saltpond Beach. While the initial altercation seemed to settle down, tensions flared once again on January 3 when a violent encounter occurred at the Mankessim Shell Filling Station, near the popular Pizza Man outlet.
It is believed that the incident at the filling station was a retaliatory act for the earlier beach clash. According to police sources, three young men from Ekumfi Eyisam were confronted by Mankessim youth at the station, where they were harassed and assaulted. Realizing they were outnumbered, the victims reportedly called for reinforcements.
Within minutes, a group from Ekumfi Eyisam, armed with firearms, cutlasses, and bottles of acid, arrived at the scene, turning the normally busy filling station into a battlefield.
A Shocking Escalation
The scale of the violence has shocked the Central Region, particularly due to the use of acid as a weapon, adding a terrifying new dimension to local youth conflicts. Eyewitnesses reported that as the violence spread, the Mankessim police struggled to maintain control, and the streets became flooded with panicked residents fleeing the scene.
"Currently, Mankessim police are trying to contain the fight, but the situation is beyond control. Everyone is running for their lives," said one eyewitness.
Victims in Critical Condition
Local hospitals are currently treating several individuals who arrived with severe chemical burns and life-threatening cuts. Medical personnel are working tirelessly to provide care, though the identities of the victims in critical condition are yet to be confirmed. Authorities are also ensuring the safety of hospital premises, as concerns grow over potential reprisal attacks.
The police are continuing their investigations into the incident and have yet to release further details on the exact circumstances surrounding the violence.
