Senate President Godswill Akpabio has announced his decision to withdraw all pending court cases against Senator Natasha Akpoti and several other individuals accused of defaming him.
Akpabio made this disclosure during a New Year church service held at Sacred Heart Parish in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. Speaking before the congregation, he revealed that he had filed nearly nine lawsuits against individuals he claimed had lied, defamed, and slandered his name.
According to the Senate President, his perspective changed while listening to the priest’s sermon during the service.
“I had almost nine cases in court against some individuals who defamed me, who lied against me and slandered my name. But as I listened to the priest, I suddenly realised he was speaking directly to me,” Akpabio said.
Moved by the message, Akpabio stated that he chose forgiveness and peace over prolonged legal battles. He subsequently issued a public directive to his legal team to discontinue all the cases.
“Therefore, I hereby direct my solicitors to withdraw all lawsuits against them,” he added.
The decision has sparked widespread discussion across political and social circles, with many describing it as an uncommon display of reflection and restraint in Nigerian politics. While opinions remain divided on the implications of the move, Akpabio’s action underscores a deliberate choice to prioritise reconciliation over litigation.
