Malami Returns to Kebbi with Family After Meeting ₦1.5bn Bail Conditions

Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), on Thursday night arrived in Kebbi State alongside his wife, Hajia Bashir Asabe, and their son, Abubakar Abdulaziz, following the fulfillment of strict bail conditions imposed by a Federal High Court in Abuja.

The family arrived aboard a private jet and were received by supporters and relatives who gathered at the airport to welcome them in a celebratory atmosphere.

Court Grants Bail

The Federal High Court granted bail to Malami, his wife, and son on Wednesday, setting the total bail sum at ₦1.5 billion. Each of the three was required to post a release bond of ₦500 million.

In addition, the court directed that each defendant provide two sureties with verified landed property located in high-value areas of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Bail Conditions

As part of the bail requirements, the sureties were ordered to submit affidavits of means and relevant documentation to establish their financial capacity. The court also instructed the defendants to surrender their international passports to the court registry and barred them from travelling outside Nigeria without prior court approval.

Allegations and Charges

Malami and his family are currently facing trial by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on 16 counts, including allegations of money laundering and other financial crimes. The charges are linked to an alleged ₦8.7 billion bribery and illicit funds scheme, spanning several years. The family has denied all allegations.
