NAC Breda have moved decisively to arrest a difficult 2025/26 Eredivisie campaign by turning to familiar faces, announcing the return of former Ghana international Matthew Amoah to their technical staff and the signing of experienced forward Andre Ayew until the end of the season.
The club confirmed on December 26, 2025, that Amoah had joined the technical team, where he will work alongside another former NAC striker, Anouar Diba. The duo have been charged with improving the team’s attacking output, an area that has troubled the club throughout the season. NAC underlined their intent five days later by completing the acquisition of Ayew, adding proven quality, leadership, and experience to the squad.
Technical director Peter Maas praised the appointments, stressing the value Amoah and Diba bring through their specialist attacking insight. He explained that both former players had already made a strong impact through their involvement with the club’s youth setup, and their elevation to the senior team was a logical and strategic progression.
NAC Breda currently find themselves at the foot of the Eredivisie table, with 13 points from 17 matches, and face an uphill battle to avoid relegation. Club officials are hopeful that the blend of technical expertise off the pitch and seasoned leadership on it can help spark a recovery in the second half of the season.
Amoah’s return carries particular significance. During his playing days at NAC Breda between 2007 and 2011, he was a reliable source of goals, scoring 57 times and providing 12 assists in more than 130 appearances, according to Transfermarkt. Diba also left his mark during his spell at the club from 2002 to 2007, recording over 120 appearances with 20 goals and 20 assists.
On the international stage, Amoah featured for Ghana at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany and ended his national team career with 45 caps and 12 goals. In his new role, he will work closely with several Ghanaian players at the club, including Kamal Sowah, Dennis Odoi, and Andre Ayew.
Ayew’s signing further bolsters the Ghanaian contingent at NAC Breda. The son of African football icon Abedi Ayew “Pele,” he arrives with a wealth of experience, having made close to 600 official appearances across Europe’s top leagues and competitions, including the UEFA Champions League, Ligue 1 and 2, the Premier League, the English Championship, and the Turkish Süper Lig. He has scored more than 160 goals in his career.
Reacting to his move, Ayew described the transfer as a challenge he is motivated to take on, emphasising his determination to help the team and reiterating that survival in the Eredivisie is the club’s main objective for the remainder of the season.
With respected club figures returning both on the sidelines and on the pitch, NAC Breda will be hoping renewed leadership, experience, and sharper attacking focus can ignite a turnaround in their campaign.
