Police Arrest Five Suspects Over Assault on Teacher at Kade Senior High Technical School

Police have arrested five suspects in connection with the assault of Michael Quayson, a teacher at Kade Senior High Technical School in the Kwaebibirim Municipality of the Eastern Region.

According to reports by Citi News, officers from the Ghana Police Service Cyber Security Unit played a key role in the arrests. The suspects were apprehended on January 5, 2026, after travelling from Accra to Kade as part of ongoing investigations into the incident, which occurred in October 2025.

The Eastern Regional Chairman of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Awoonor Yevu Godwin, confirmed that the suspects are expected to be arraigned before the Kade Circuit Court.

The Ghana Police Service Cyber Security Unit has been leading investigations into the case, a move that has been described as a demonstration of the police service’s commitment to protecting educators and ensuring accountability for crimes committed against them.

Circumstances Surrounding the Attack

Michael Quayson was reportedly attacked by students after he refused to allow examination malpractice during ongoing exams. Known for his strict enforcement of school rules, Quayson had earned a reputation as a disciplinarian determined to restore order on campus. His actions allegedly angered some students, who later targeted him.

A viral video of the incident, shared on social media, showed students slapping and beating the teacher with a tree branch as he attempted to defend himself.

Following the assault, reports indicated that the parents of the students involved reached an out-of-court settlement with the teacher after the matter was reported to the police.

President Mahama Condemns Violence Against Teachers

The arrests come in the wake of strong condemnation from President John Dramani Mahama over recent attacks on teachers across the country. Speaking at the Delegate Conference of the Ghana National Association of Teachers on January 5, 2026, the president called for swift and decisive action against individuals who assault educators.

President Mahama expressed disappointment over the handling of the Kade incident, noting that the students involved were not subjected to formal disciplinary measures.

“I saw the video of the mathematics teacher being beaten because he refused to allow students to cheat. They acted with a sense of entitlement,” he said. “The unfortunate part is that after the matter was reported to the police, the parents of the students went there and claimed they had settled the issue amicably.”

The president described the students’ actions as criminal and stated that they should have been formally charged for the assault.

Related Incidents in Schools

In a similar development, YEN.com.gh previously reported that the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination at Wesley Senior High School in Konongo, Ashanti Region, was disrupted after some students attacked teachers for enforcing strict invigilation during the Christian Religious Studies paper. The students reportedly threw stones and sachet water, forcing teachers to flee the examination centre.

The incidents have reignited national conversations about safety in schools and the urgent need to protect teachers while maintaining discipline within Ghana’s education system.
