President John Dramani Mahama has paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, Mahama Naser Toure, following the lawmaker’s passing.
The president was accompanied by the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu; the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Emmanuel Nii Ashie-Moore; and other senior officials of the party.
During the visit, President Mahama was visibly moved. In a video shared by 1957 News on X, he struggled to hold back tears as he sat quietly between Haruna Iddrisu and Ashie-Moore, at one point bowing his head in an apparent effort to conceal his emotions. The footage has since gone viral, drawing widespread public sympathy.
Mahama Naser Toure, popularly known as Mac Naza, passed away at the age of 60 after a short illness at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra on Sunday, January 4, 2026. He was laid to rest on Monday, January 5, 2026, following a Janazah prayer at the National Mosque in Kanda.
The burial ceremony was attended by several high-profile government officials and Members of Parliament from both the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), reflecting the respect the late MP commanded across the political divide. Among those present were Yusif Jajah (MP for Ayawaso North), Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs), John Dumelo (MP for Ayawaso West Wuogon and Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture), Samuel Nartey George (Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation), Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije (MP for Ablekuma South), Mohammed Adamu Ramadan (MP for Adenta), Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe (MP for Ada East), and several others.
Born into politics with strong grassroots support, Mahama Naser Toure first entered Parliament in 2012 after winning the Ayawaso East seat on the ticket of the NDC. He successfully retained the seat in the 2016, 2020, and 2024 general elections, securing more than 70 per cent of the votes in his final contest. His consistent victories underscored Ayawaso East’s status as a stronghold of the party.
During his time in Parliament, Mac Naza served in several key capacities, including as Vice Chairman of the Energy Committee. He was also a member of the Roads and Transport Committee, the House Committee, and the Private Members’ Bills and Motions Committee, where he contributed significantly to legislative work.
Scenes from the burial service were marked by deep emotion, particularly as the late MP’s son was seen weeping openly while bidding farewell to his father. Many Ghanaians took to social media to express their condolences and to celebrate the life and legacy of a lawmaker widely regarded as dedicated, compassionate, and committed to public service.
The visit by President Mahama and other senior officials has been widely viewed as a testament to the profound impact Mahama Naser Toure had on Ghana’s political landscape and on those who worked closely with him.
