Country music icon Dolly Parton kept her cancer battle hidden from millions of fans and even some of her own family members — and now her sister is sharing the deeply personal final moments they spent together.
Stella Parton, 77, appeared on "CBS Mornings" with Gayle King on Sept. 10, where she opened up about her sister's quiet courage in her final weeks. The legendary singer died Aug. 25 at age 80 after what representatives described as a "brief battle with cancer."
A Sister's Final Request
In one of the interview's most poignant revelations, Stella shared that the last thing Dolly asked of her was not for music, money or fame — but for prayer.
"That's the last thing Dolly asked me for, was prayer," Stella recalled. She described her sister as "definitely prepared" for what lay ahead, saying: "She knew where she was goin'. She wasn't goin' anywhere bad. She was going to be with Mama and Daddy."
Why Dolly Kept Her Secret
Dolly chose to keep her cancer diagnosis private because she "could not bear negative things" and did not want her fans to worry, Stella explained. "She didn't want a lot of the family worried about it. Some of us knew, the ones that were closer, but not every relative," she said. "She did not want people sad."
The family has also declined to reveal the specific type of cancer, with Stella stating: "It's not my business to tell her business."
A particularly revealing moment came when Stella addressed the October 2025 Facebook post from their sister Freida Parton, who publicly asked fans to pray for Dolly amid her health struggles. That post prompted widespread concern before anyone knew the severity of the situation. According to Stella, Dolly was less than pleased. "I'm pretty sure Dolly said, 'Pipe it down,'" Stella recalled with a gentle laugh. "She knew Freida was just upset and hurt, but she thought, 'Don't be telling my situation, Freida. Don't be spilling my business.'"
A Heartbreak or Something More?
Some fans have wondered whether Dolly died of a broken heart after losing her husband of nearly 60 years, Carl Dean, in March 2025. Stella addressed that theory directly during the interview, offering a different perspective.
"I think she was very sad, but I don't think that's why she got sick," Stella said. "I think she worked too hard and didn't maybe take as good a care of herself as she should have." She noted that Dolly once admitted, "I spent a lot of time caring for Carl that maybe I neglected myself."
When Gayle King asked if Dolly had neglected herself while caring for Carl, Stella confirmed: "To a point." She described their relationship as "very unique and very deep and loyal," adding: "It broke her heart to see him in the shape that he got to before he passed away."
A Working Woman to the Very End
Stella revealed that even in her final conversation with her sister, Dolly was still working — a testament to the relentless drive that made her a global icon.
"She was working. That was her passion," Stella said. "I think my sister worked so hard for so long and just kept going."
The sisters shared a weekly ritual: Tuesday morning coffee over the phone before sunrise, a tradition born from their humble farm girl roots. "She'd say, 'Shoot, Tedda, we get more work done before the sun comes up than most folks do all day long!'" Stella recalled warmly.
Dolly's Last Act of Generosity
Even as she faced her own mortality, Dolly was thinking of others. Stella previously revealed that her sister told her: "If there was no hope for her, she would still allow her medical team to try experimental drugs in the hope of helping others in the future."
How She Wants Her Sister Remembered
Stella hopes the world remembers Dolly as "very sweet, kind, loving, brilliant and so talented." She added: "Her creativity had no bounds, and she could dream bigger than anybody. I want young people, young girls and boys that may think they have no opportunity to dream — coming from our situation, she gave us permission to dream that way."
A public memorial service is not planned. Instead, Dolly's estate has announced "DollyFest: The Celebration of a Lifetime," a two-city festival set for Nashville and London in 2027 — a celebration Dolly herself had originally envisioned for her 80th birthday.
