Bloodshed in New Winneba: 6 Arrested as Land Dispute Turns Deadly, IGP Deploys Military-Grade Reinforcements

 

A violent clash over a land dispute in Ghana’s Central Region has left three people dead and 19 others injured, prompting a massive security crackdown and the deployment of armored vehicles.

The Central Regional Police Command has confirmed the arrest of six individuals following a brutal and deadly confrontation that rocked the New Winneba municipality and its adjoining communities on Tuesday. The violence, which erupted in the Gomoa enclave, has sent shockwaves through the region, highlighting the escalating tensions over land ownership that have plagued the area for months.

The communities most affected by the unrest include Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze, and Gomoa Pomadze. According to eyewitness accounts and preliminary police reports, the chaos began in the early hours of Tuesday when a heavily armed group of individuals descended upon the settlements, launching a coordinated attack on residents.

The suspects have been identified as 52-year-old Kweku Kakraba, alongside younger individuals aged between 19 and 22: Arko Thomas, Samuel Tulasi, Samuel Gyasi, Emmanuel Okyere, and Seth Osei. They are currently in police custody assisting with investigations and are expected to be arraigned before a court of law shortly, where they will likely face charges including murder, rioting, and causing unlawful harm.

IGP Orders Heavy Reinforcement

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), deeply concerned by the escalation of violence, has ordered the immediate deployment of additional security personnel to the affected communities. In a rare move signaling the severity of the security threat, the IGP has authorized the deployment of two armored military-grade vehicles to the New Winneba area. The armoured vehicles are expected to patrol the hot spots within the Gomoa districts over the coming days.
