Kumasi, Ghana – Ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Delegates Conference on October 3, a new survey suggests that while the electorate is concerned about the candidates’ finances, the delegates are prioritising something else.

According to renowned pollster and Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, Mussa Dankwa, the delegates care less about the monetary status of the candidates.

“If you go to the public, most people were talking about resources, mobilisation, all those things surprisingly went down the drain when you get to actually talking to the delegates,” he said.

This was illustrated by one delegate who, Mr. Dankwa said, asked rhetorically, “Can one tree grow into a bush?”, and then added, “if the chairman is resourceful or has money, can the one man fund a party?” to drive home the point.

The delegate was arguing that, while the rich may have an advantage in many fields, that one person’s wealth does not necessarily translate into the funds required to run a political party machinery at the national level.

The latest research, which is part of the ongoing Political Environment Assessment Survey, has identified “unity-building” as the prime consideration for delegates when choosing between the contending candidates for the NPP National Chairman ticket.

“45 percent (45%) of the delegates we interviewed said the top priority is somebody who can bring the party together. That percentage trumps all others,” Mr. Dankwa said.

He added, “only 19% said the candidate should have a good link with the grassroots, and 18% each said personality and discipline are important. Overall, we realise that it is the unity that really is driving the delegates tomorrow when they go to vote”.

The delegates, who will give their verdict at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on October 3, are the latest entrants in the electoral drama that has been playing in the Ghanaian politics for the past three years and will determine the winner of the 2028 general elections.

The four candidates for the National Chairman ticket are:

· John Boadu, former General Secretary

· Boakye Agyarko, former Energy Minister

· Paul Afoko, former National Chairman

· Sammy Crabbe, former Greater Accra Regional Chairman

While other opinion surveys, such as the one by Prof. Smart Sarpong of Kumasi Technical University, suggest that the former General Secretary, John Boadu leads the pack with 46.5% of the voice of the people, compared to 24.8% by his colleague, Boakye Agyarko, the Dankwa survey captures the thinking behind these numbers. Although Mr. Boadu is the incumbent, the former General Secretary has been a major player in NPP politics, having served under two consecutive winners of the general elections.
