Samuel Dubik Mahama, the former Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), has refuted recent allegations made in an investigative report regarding missing ECG containers. Mahama stated that he was never given the opportunity to respond to the claims made against him.
In an interview on the Asaase Breakfast Show, Mahama expressed his frustration that, despite being mentioned in the report, he was not contacted for his side of the story. “I was never called. I was never asked to provide my perspective on this report,” Mahama explained.
Mahama further questioned the accuracy of the investigative findings, particularly concerning the location of the missing containers. He pointed out discrepancies in the report, noting that it stated the containers were at Tema Port, which implied they were not under full control of ECG. “Did the minister say the containers were in ECG’s custody? The report says they were at Tema Port. That means they were not entirely under ECG’s control,” Mahama argued.
He clarified that the containers were stored in a secure zone managed by the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), marine police, national security, and customs, rather than solely under ECG’s supervision. “If the containers were missing while under ECG’s full custody, then the blame would be justified. However, they were in a security-controlled area,” Mahama said.
The former ECG head also criticized the report for failing to address several important factors, including legal complexities surrounding the containers. He highlighted the ongoing PDS arbitration and the legal issues surrounding some containers that were brought in under the previous administration in 2017. “The report did not consider whether some of these containers were involved in legal disputes. These are critical aspects that must be accounted for,” Mahama added.
In conclusion, Mahama called for a fair and thorough review of ECG’s operations, emphasizing the need for all perspectives to be considered in any investigation or report.
