The Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, announced that the government will expand the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme by including an additional 50,000 households beginning in July 2025.
During a monitoring visit to the Krowor Municipality on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, the Minister shared that efforts are being made to address challenges in the disbursement process. She confirmed that beneficiaries who no longer meet eligibility criteria, including deceased individuals, will be removed to make space for new applicants.
Lartey also responded to public concerns regarding the inclusion of ineligible individuals in the programme, urging citizens to report such instances to ensure corrective actions are taken.
In reference to the budget announced by the Finance Minister in Parliament, Lartey highlighted that the initiative to add 50,000 more households is a part of the government's ongoing commitment to poverty alleviation. She assured that continuous monitoring would occur until the last beneficiary receives their allocated benefit for this cycle. The program will resume once funds are available for the next disbursement.
Acknowledging the limited nature of the current aid, Lartey emphasized the positive outcomes that have arisen, with some beneficiaries using the funds to start businesses. She noted that while the assistance may be modest, it provides a crucial stepping stone for families to improve their livelihoods and eventually become self-sufficient.
